Peer Tutor
About the Peer Tutor Initiative
The Peer Tutor Initiative is a bold, youth-led movement dedicated to transforming communities through education. It empowers young leaders, many of whom have faced challenges like gender discrimination and poverty, to step up and bridge learning gaps for adolescent girls in their communities. These Peer Tutors are more than just educators—they are agents of change. With support to develop entrepreneurial skills, they not only earn a sustainable income but also build the attitudes and behaviors necessary for long-term employability or entrepreneurship. The initiative provides them with a platform to explore socially relevant livelihood opportunities while making a lasting impact on the education system.
Where We Work
Since its launch in 2022, the Peer Tutor Initiative has reached 24 districts across 7 states, with over 200 Peer Tutors actively bringing change to their communities. Currently, 36 youth leaders between the ages of 18-22 are working in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), supporting over 900 adolescent girls in bridging their educational gaps and ensuring they stay on track.
Key Outcomes Achieved
- Increased School Enrollment: More adolescent girls are not only returning to school but are excited about their future.
- Improved Literacy and Numeracy: Substantial progress has been made in foundational literacy and numeracy, with girls making significant strides in their academic abilities.
- Enhanced Well-being: Through newfound self-awareness, these girls are building meaningful relationships, improving their emotional well-being, and developing responsible decision-making skills. The Peer Tutor Initiative is making a lasting impact, one community at a time, by empowering youth to lead and bridging critical educational gaps for adolescent girls across India.
Journey Flow
Change Stories
Khushboo’s Journey: From Child Marriage to Classroom Success Khushboo Kumari, a 14-year-old girl from Bihar, almost became a victim of child marriage. After dropping out of school due to financial stress post-COVID, her parents planned to marry her off. However, her Peer Tutors intervened, stopping the marriage and getting her back into school. In six months, Khushboo’s academic progress skyrocketed—her foundational skills in literacy and numeracy improved dramatically, and she regained her confidence. She is now thriving in her learning center. Ruby: The Trailblazing Peer Tutor Ruby, a 22-year-old Peer Tutor from Uttar Pradesh, is more than just a tutor—she’s a trailblazer. In a community that didn’t believe girls needed education, Ruby not only brought girls back to learning but also empowered them to think about their futures. Through her leadership, she has inspired 40-50 girls every year to enroll in schools. Ruby’s learning center has become a hub where girls are no longer afraid to talk about issues like menstrual health and politics—subjects that were once taboo.
