About Shivani Kumari
Shivani Kumari is a passionate advocate for sustainable agriculture and women's empowerment, hailing from Jamui, Bihar. Growing up in Bokaro, Jharkhand, she witnessed the adverse effects of industrialization on rural communities, including pollution and health issues. This experience ignited her commitment to promoting sustainable farming practices and improving the livelihoods of marginalised communities, particularly women. After declining a corporate job that promoted commercial farming, Shivani, a NIT Jamshedpur alum, embarked on a journey across India to learn about traditional and indigenous farming methods. This exploration led her to establish "Wild," an initiative focused on sustainable farming, living, and food practices. She has worked and collaborated with myriad organisations such as Pradaan and Sreejan non-governmental organisations, Teach for India and others. Through her work, she aims to create grassroots-level leadership and empower local communities to adopt environmentally friendly practices.
About their project: :
Pragati project seeks to create climate warriors and promote Analog Forestry in Chotanagpur Plateau region Simultala in Jamui, Bihar. The project focuses on educating local youth about climate change, its impacts, and potential solutions, while also providing training in sustainable agricultural practices. The Green Fellowship initiative aims to provide training and capacity building of 60 local youths, who will be educated in three batches on climate-related issues, agroecological farming techniques, and green livelihood opportunities. This training equips participants with essential knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges effectively. Additionally, the project will work with five local farmers to implement Analog Forestry practices on their lands, enhancing biodiversity and restoring degraded areas, which is crucial for creating resilient ecosystems. By encouraging participation in small and large-scale environmental projects, the initiative aims to strengthen community ties and promote collective action towards sustainability.
