March 24, 2020 - lockdown announced
Day 2 – Ruben discusses marriage with his mother
Day 3 – a call from a street vendor being beaten up by police becomes a call for action
Day 4,5,6 and onwards – Khaana chahiye is born
A marriage did happen that month. It was the marriage of ‘demand’ for food by thousands of people and ‘supply’ by reopening restaurant kitchens, crowdfunding resources, partnering with the government and mobilizing hundreds of volunteers.
Ruben’s grit, nimbleness and unparalleled trust in his team enabled Khaana Chahiye, an organization he founded, to feed lakhs of people during the pandemic
About Ruben Mascarenhas
Ruben did work individually providing COVID relief and then through his youth led initiative Khaana Chahiye in Mumbai. The response was both for immediate needs (hospital beds, cylinders etc) as well as food kits extensively across Mumbai. Ruben's work tapped into various samaj-sarkar-bazaar networks to make things happen in Mumbai. He was at the heart of the city response team.
