About Saddam Husain
Currently pursuing his bachelor’s, Saddam Husain belongs to the extremely marginalized Van Juggar community of Uttarakhand. He got associated with team Maee in 2019, where he learnt the importance of environmental protection and works twice a week with the local youth and team Maee towards the protection of wild animals. As a GreEntrepreneur, his project involved reigniting in people the connection with nature, which he feels is declining every day. He trained local youth for bird identification, rewilding and tree tagging. The participants also planted saplings and took ownership of the trees to protect and take care of them. Tree lopping was also done, and women were made an active part of the project. The project involved nine outdoor field visits and fifteen birding sessions and a six-month nature guide training program Rajaji National Park, Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve, and Laldhang Lansdown Division Landscape. Husain saw a clear change in the community’s attitudes towards the issue of climate change, and believes that the community will now carefully think about how each action of theirs affects the environment. He plans to continue his outreach work and set up more training programmes.
