North East Network (NEN) is a women’s rights organisation linking with rural and urban women and organisations on development and related issues within North East India. NEN recognizes the potential and right of every individual and child as crucial, irrespective of their race, colour, caste, ethnic origins, different abilities, linguistic group, religious belief, sexual orientation, marital/civil/family status, gender, age or social grouping. Thus, NEN endeavours touching individual lives to bring about a collective change in society.

NEN also connects to different civil society organisations on development and social justice issues within North East India. It was set up as part of the preparatory process for the Beijing World Conference on Women in 1995. In the 20 years since its establishment, NEN has become a platform to address women’s human rights.

NEN is one of the first organisations in the North East to combine activism with advocacy from a liberal feminist perspective, conveying critical gender issues through dialogue and dissemination.

NEN’s overall objectives are towards improving the pace and quality of developmental inputs among persons disadvantageously placed in society for enhancing their social and economic status. The organization shall, without any profit motive and without any distinction of caste, creed, colour, disabilities, sexual orientation, community or religion, inter alia, act on the following:

1. NEN aspires a gender-just society in the northeast region of India with advancing collective action and gender equality.

2. Promote efforts at preserving ecosystems and bio-diversity of northeast India.

3. Promote constructive and creative pursuits among the youth of the Northeast through the use of performing arts, media communications, arts and literature.

4. Facilitate the process of economic transformation of grassroots women through the promotion of sustained micro-enterprises such as handloom, handicrafts and organic agro-food products etc.
