Clean Water and Sanitation

FARHEEN

APPROACH ADOPTED:

Farheen went from neighborhood to neighborhood and came across a community where people had to walk kilometers to collect water and used a makeshift trolley to bring water for one’s household in buckets. Her parents and neighbors had already thought that she was wasting time, as her colony had a submersible pump line that supplied water. The people she met were also hesitant to talk about their issues. However as part of her tasks she had a discussion with them on the reasons of water scarcity in the neighbourhood and also motivated them to go and speak to their local village leaders to see if there can be a solution to the problem. As an interim solution, she collaborated with 3 other Jagriks – Aaliyah, Saba, and Sabia to transport water from her colony to the identified location and helped more than 10 households in collecting water for their daily chores. “I was so happy. I had never thought that my small act could bring happiness and new motivation to so many people. I have also promised to help them in taking their problem to the village leaders”, says Farheen.

TARGET GROUP IMPACTED:

The residents of Teji Kheda, a small village near Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.

NEXT ON AGENDA:

Farheen wants to pursue her further education and training in becoming a doctor. Her inspiration comes from understanding inequality and inequitable distribution of resources in society.

HOW DID IT CHANGE YOU?

The Be A Jagrik initiative has opened new doors for Farheen and brought with it the language of Sustainable Development Goals. “This was the first time for her when she was engaging with total strangers. In terms of personal life, my parents don’t rebuke me anymore. They don’t specifically agree with me but also accept the change these tasks have had on me. Also, I am still in touch with those households in Teji Kheda. I know we might have been a respite for just a week, but they still adore us.” says Farheen
